Old information

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 5:35 AM

I'm not having much joy getting to my blog at the moment, but then, I don't really have anything to say.

Having said that, I've been thinking about topics to write about and was wondering what my readers think about information that is a few years old. What I mean here is, I have a number of magazines on writing (I won't mention the names here) and I got to thinking, is the information in these magazines still relevant today? Mine go back to 2004.

So, with this in mind, what are your thoughts on the subject? Would you use information from years ago, or do you think there have been enough updates to make information from then obsolete.

I look forward to reading your thoughts.

I'd probably just use them as a starting point, and then check out the websites for any updated information. I wouldn't rely on the information those particular magazines contain, because I'm sure there would be changes, especially from that long ago.

I think it depends on the topic. It's hard to say without knowing more.

I'd say it depends on many factors. Make sure you are reading up-to-date publishing as far as stories and books go, and then compare what today's authors are doing to what the info in the writer's mags say. Does that make any sense? LOL

I have several old writing books and magazines that I still use. Not so much for market research or things that are constantly changing, but to learn new tools. Just because something is "Outdated" doesn't mean there still isn't useful tips or tricks in them.
